It's time to crown a new best budget phone

Once a year, we choose a new favourite budget smartphone. Our King of Phones Ben Johnston descends from his microchip throne to anoint a new handset in a ceremony grand enough to rival the coronation of King George IV. I'm only partly kidding. It is time to name a new budget phone champion, and while our Monarch of Mobiles doesn't have a crown and sceptre, he does have a rigorous set of testing processes and a keen eye for a bargain.

Our winner? The Motorola Moto G77, which earned its place with a gorgeous AMOLED display (unusual at this price) and bumper 28hr battery life. In a volatile market, the G77 represents increasingly rare value for money.

Elsewhere this week, I've got one more smartphone review: the Google Pixel 11, which fell just short of a recommendation despite its excellent cameras.

In our Home section, we put the great-value Aosu SolarCam T2 Pro outdoor solar security camera through its paces, and spent some cosy nights with the excellent Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil pillowtop mattress.

Our new favourite budget phone

With budget tech falling left and right, the Motorola Moto G77 is refreshingly good value for money, writes our Phones Editor Ben Johnston. It's slim, lightweight and has excellent stamina for the price, and the screen's pretty impressive too.

A great Pixel phone with a mediocre processor

We bemoaned Google's infuriating attitude to smartphones in last week's newsletter, and this week the Google Pixel 11 proved us right to do so. It's a truly excellent smartphone let down by internal components that lag behind the competition.

A competent, feature-rich solar security camera

Compared head-to-head with our favourite solar security camera – the Tapo C645D – the new Aosu comes loaded with free AI features and captures excellent low-light footage, but our home security expert Alun Taylor was baffled by the mediocre Wi-Fi connectivity.

A near-perfect pillowtop mattress for hot sleepers

The Silentnight UltraGel Miracoil Pillowtop mattress manages to offer plenty of contouring comfort thanks to its pillowtop design, and it’s definitely a good choice for hotter sleepers, writes our sleep expert Jo Plumridge.
